Research Track

Student Pot Luck Event - 2021-23 cohort

The programme held a 'Pot Luck' event for the EUROSUD students on 6 December, at the Queen Margaret Union (QMU) at the University of Glasgow, to say our farewells to the students before they headed off to their next mobility location at either National and Kapodistrian University of Athens  (NKUA) or Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). There was a selection of food and baking from all corners of the globe - well done to our students for the great  effort made to bring us a tasting of delicious food from their home countries.

The Scottish selection of smoked salmon, haggis, neeps and potato bites with the added scotch whisky tasting went down a treat. We had a good laugh as students tasted the whisky then made funny faces as it hit the back of the throat, too much for some! It was a 'sight to see'!

All the food went down a treat and much fun was had on the night. It proved to be a great ending to the first semester in Glasgow. We will miss the presence of our lovely students!

Round Table - The Politics of Religion in Southern Europe - December 2021

The EUROSUD students on Dr Myrto Tsakatika's course, Politics and Society in Southern Europe, were invited to an organised Round Table discussing 'The Politics of Religion in Southern Europe' as part of their Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree programme.

The experts involved were Dr Xabier Itcaina (University of Bordeaux), Dr Stratos Patrikios (University of Strathclyde) and Dr Ates Altinordu (Sabanci University),  Sabanci University is an Associate Partner of the EUROSUD programme. Discussing topics; the social role of the Catholic Church in Italy, Spain and France; religiosity, political attitudes and the modernisation of the Greek Orthodox Church; political Islam in Turkey from the 1970s until today.

Dr Itçaina, focused on the general argument of his book Catholic mediations in Southern Europe. The invisible politics of religion (Routledge, 2019). The presentation aimed at proposing a comparative analytical framework on religion and politics in Southern Europe, here focused on Catholic countries, to the EUROSUD students. As a whole, the composition of the panel, with three papers on different religions (Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Islam) and countries (Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey) was very insightful and gave the floor to an interesting discussion, which kept the students engaged.

It was a great pleasure to see our first cohort of students graduate. These students had a very challenging time with working and travelling to various countries during a world pandemic, coping with sometimes challenging personal issues to have graduated and done exceedingly well in the end result is a proud moment for everyone involved with the students and the programme. Well done - We are all very proud of you!

To all the students who graduated in absentia for various reasons - we were thinking of you on the day!
