DISSERTATION SEASON!

Dr Simone Tulumello

EUROSUD 2nd year dissertation students attended a series of Dissertation Colloquia (April, May & June online), coordinated by Dr Simone Tulumello from our partner at ICS Lisbon with our Director Dr Myrto Tsakatika in attendance.

The Dissertation Colloquia offered an informal space for discussion on issues, doubts, problems and successes in the making of the dissertation.

The students were pleased that they had suggested the Dissertation Colloquia at the last Staff Student Liaison Committee (SSLC) meeting and that the Consortium had taken this on board!

Meet Iakovos Tsalikoglou EUROSUD Int Master Student - Internship track

#𝗺𝘆𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗨𝗗𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 at Corinth Pipeworks

Hi everyone! My name is Iakovos, I come from Greece, and I am currently in the second and final year of the EUROSUD Master’s programme in Aix-Marseille Université.

I chose this programme because I wanted to better contextualize my academic skills in South Europe, the geographical region I have lived in for most of my life. I also believed the opportunity to learn and experience life in 3 different countries would be invaluable, and even though the pandemic certainly was an obstacle, I still believe it to be so.

Another factor that really attracted me to the programme was the possibility of pursuing an internship during its second year. I ended up securing a position at Corinth Pipeworks, a private steel pipe manufacturer, that has work on several large international projects in Southern Europe and the world. As an intern at their project management division, I am responsible for assisting with the management of the company’s relations with its partners, as well as its production and supply chain. During this time, I gained transferable skills useful to anyone trying to start a professional career in addition to valuable knowledge about how international projects of these magnitudes are managed.

EUROSUD has enabled me not only to develop many marketable skills but also has allowed me to find out what form of work suits me most. I’m looking forward to employing all I’ve learned in the programme to benefit my future work!

Meet Carmel Silveira - EUROSUD International Master Student Internship

Hi everyone! I'm Carmel, I come from Brazil and I'm currently enrolled in the final year of the EUROSUD Master programme at Aix-Marseille University.

I decided to undertake the professional track of the EUROSUD Master programme with the aim of developing my career as public policy analyst in Europe, while also having the chance to broaden my knowledge on migration. This is one of the main challenges at the Southern region, and the EUROSUD programme has provided me with the chance to focus on this subject throughout the two years of my studies and practices in Glasgow, Athens and Aix-en-Provence/Marseille.

At the moment, I am completing an internship at the European office of Rede Sem Fronteiras (Network without Borders), a network of civil society organizations and social movements that promotes the rights of migrants and refugees in Europe and Latin America.

Recently, we promoted the First European Social Forum on Migration (EFSM Lisbon 2021), which for me was a great work opportunity to put into practice the background knowledge acquired throughout the EUROSUD programme.

#𝗺𝘆𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗨𝗗𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝘁 @𝗢𝗘𝗖𝗗

Hi everyone! I’m Vukan and I’m currently finishing the EUROSUD Masters programme at UAM in Madrid while interning with the OECD in Paris.

Two years ago, I chose this programme because of its multi-disciplinary structure that combines courses in politics, IR, history, sociology and modern languages. Thematically, I chose it because of my interest in South Europe which began during my student exchange in Milan where I learnt about the significance of the region as the EU’s southern border and as a climate change hotspot.

My past three semesters were taught in Glasgow, Athens and Madrid and were packed with new theory, essays, group projects and guest lectures. Now, I am happy to report that I am applying in practice, at the OECD’s Public Affairs and Communications Directorate, what I’ve learnt over the course of my degree. As the Directorate's intern, I have been researching and writing briefings ahead of Global Parliamentary Network meetings, assisting with the launch of a new youth advisory board and helping the media team with their engagement with journalists.

Thanks to EUROSUD and the OECD, I have realised that international cooperation is an area that ties together my academic background and practical skills and is where I hope to stay after graduation!

EUROSUD Film Night

EUROSUD hold a regular film night for students and staff focusing on movies about Southern Europe or filmed in Southern Europe. The  group are asked to come up with suggestions for viewing. After the viewing there is a discussion about the film. This is a great regular social event for the all!

The recent screening watched was Letters from War (Portuguese: Cartas da Guerra) which is based around a collection of letters written by a young soldier, doctor and an aspirant writer, to his wife while he was serving in Angola between 1971 and 1973, during the Portuguese Colonial War. Following the movie, we talked about the War itself and then also what patterns arise in the movie that we can identify in other conflicts as well.

The first screening was Soldiers of Salamina (David Trueba, 2003)

The movie is inspired by a best-seller novel under the same name written by Javier Cercas. In it “The narrator is fascinated by the way memory congeals into history: the insidious process by which personal narratives become part of a past that can no longer be verified, and is therefore taken to be the truth, even though it is only one possible version of what actually happened. As Cercas points out, the events of the Spanish civil war, which took place only a generation earlier, are becoming as distant and fixed as the story of the soldiers who fought the Persian fleet at Salamis more than 2,000 years earlier.

Meet Giulia Bottoloni - EUROSUD Int Master Student - Internship

#𝗺𝘆𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗨𝗗𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 @ Fundación Cruz Blanca

Hello Giulia here! I'm a student of the EUROSUD Masters programme. I chose EUROSUD because I wanted to broaden my knowledge of the Euro-Mediterranean region and its contemporary challenges. This Master also allowed me to explore the topics I am most interested in, namely migration and gender equality from an intercultural perspective. My pathway allowed me to study at the University of Glasgow, the University of Athens and Aix-Marseille. This challenging and enriching programme helped me build an international and multidisciplinary background that led me to the internship I am doing now.

I am doing an internship at Fundación Cruz Blanca, a Spanish NGO specialized in human rights protection and integration of populations at risk of being marginalized. Since February, I have been supporting the implementation of an EU project aimed at improving the detection and identification of minors and young adult victims of human trafficking, together with other 3 partner organizations in Italy, France and Belgium. I would like to continue to work in this environment and I am glad to have chosen this academic pathway that allowed me to explore it.
