EUROSUD students may apply for funding for activities linked to the programme and/or their related career development that reflect the ethos and learning objectives of the degree programme. Below, we hear from Mercedes, who used the fund to attend a two-week French language and culture summer course at Aix-Marseille University.

Hi everyone, I am Emilya and I’m in my second year of EUROSUD. I’m happy to share that I am back on my German language journey with the support of the Career Development Fund. You might think ‘why German? Why not Italian, Spanish, or French, why a language that is completely outside of EUROSUD mobility countries?’ Well, this is because of my passion for learning Deutch, even when I was doing my Bachelor’s degree I studied German for a while. Later when I started my master’s journey in EUROSUD, I enrolled in German classes in Glasgow as well. While doing my semester studies in Madrid & Italy unfortunately, German wasn’t offered by universities so I decided to practice on my own for a while.

Later I found a very prominent German language school academy in Azerbaijan, Hamburg Academy. After passing their exam (for A1 level) I was accepted, and we started with individual lessons. The academy offers many perks to students with all official/original lesson materials in German, access to the German library conversation club (with native Germans), monthly evaluation tests, and a legal certificate at the end of completion of each level. Even though sadly I can’t participate because I do online lessons every weekend, the school organizes football, volleyball, hiking, and many outdoor activities with students and teachers in order to make learning more fun! I am very pleased with my lessons, teacher, and my progress of German so far even if it is just beginning and many thanks to EUROSUD for supporting me on this journey.

Also one last fact, you can see in the pictures as well, last year I visited my younger sister who is studying and living in Germany. Have to say I fell in love with the cities (especially, Berlin was super fun!) My sister is also my main motivation she speaks very good German, and she is always helping and supporting me on this too <3 One day I am definitely planning to go back there later for PhD or research opportunity.
