Publication (2021) - José Pedro Martins Lopes
EUROSUD 2020-22 Cohort 2 student José Pedro shares his recent publication:
Lopes, José Pedro (2021) Listening to the wind of change: The implications of the 2019 general election for the Portuguese party system, International Journal of Iberian Studies, Volume 34, Number 1, 1 March 2021, pp. 47-64(18)
Abstract:
This article offers an overview of the Portuguese general election of October 2019 and of its impact in the ongoing evolution of the Portuguese party system. The election results are interpreted by looking at the socio-economic and political context in which it took place, as well as the protagonists, issues and party positions of the electoral campaign. Additionally, the process leading to the formation of the socialist minority government is also examined. It is argued that changing patterns have mostly been reverted and that the party system that comes out of this election is a more stable one. This was mainly due to institutional constraints that limit the potential of change. Nevertheless, the increasing role of the left-right cleavage, alongside the entrance of new parties in parliament might pave the way for future realignments of the Portuguese party system.
EUROSUD 2021-23 Student Induction
The University of Glasgow warmly welcomed the new student intake of EUROSUD International students, who came from 21 countries around the globe, to the City of Glasgow.
The first stage of a 2-year International Master in South European Studies, students will spend the first semester in Glasgow, before venturing to their next location, depending on their choice of pathway, selecting between Athens or Madrid for Semester 2, adding Rome and Marseille, with a Winter School in Lisbon in year 2.
Day 1 of Induction, the students were introduced to teaching and Administrative staff who gave them an overview of the courses and the administrative side of the programme, providing an opportunity for questions.
A social event was organised in the evening at the CCA - Centre for Contemporary Arts, Saramago Cafe Bar, in Sauchiehall Street, in Glasgow City, with a buffet and drinks. There was a great atmosphere as everyone got to know each other, some meeting for the first time. It was a great night!
Classes have now started, and so the EUROSUD journey begins!

Meet Daniel Pulico de Arco - EUROSUD Internship - Year 2 International Master
#𝗺𝘆𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗨𝗗𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 at TransPerfect Translations — Montpellier
Salut, tout le monde ! My name's Daniel Pulido de Arco. I come from Colombia, and I'm currently enrolled in my second and final year of the EUROSUD master's programme at Aix-Marseille Université in France.
Back in 2019, I chose this program motivated by the deep fascination I feel for the languages, the history, and the culture of Southern Europe. Today, I know I made the right decision as EUROSUD has allowed me to not only learn about the most relevant political and social issues facing Southern Europe but also to travel to several countries of the region and thus to experience life like a true Southern European.
At the moment, I am completing a six-month internship in translation project management at TransPerfect Translations (TPT), the world's largest provider of language services and technology solutions for global business. TPT has offices in over 100 cities on six continents and offers a full range of services in 170+ languages, including those of Southern Europe.
As an intern, I am responsible for providing support to the production team in handling the different phases of the translation project cycle, such as placing, timelining, budgeting, final-eyeing, to name a few. This experience has helped me acquire different job-related skills that complement my education and has shown me what it is like to handle international projects and accounts from within a large multinational corporation.
This would not have been possible without my wonderful EUROSUD family, whom I wish to thank dearly for all their help and support along the way.

Salut, I’m Anna 👋🏼
Like my dear friend Ilaria 👑, I’d also like to share my journey as a EUROSUD student and, currently, an intern at the OECD.
The Mediterranean has been the region of my major research interest since I began my undergraduate studies in International Relations in Russia🇷🇺. After getting some valuable work experience in media, translation, and management consulting, I decided to continue with my studies and was lucky to find the newly launched EUROSUD Master programme. Now, progressing through my last semester in France 🇫🇷 (after completing studies in Glasgow🏴 and Madrid🇪🇸), I can say that applying for EUROSUD was 100% the right decision that has already opened many doors for me and my fellow classmates🙌🏼
In January 2021, I started my 6-month internship as a Junior Policy Analyst at the Global Relations Secretariat of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris. While the internship is at the Eurasia Division of the GRS, which works closely with the countries of the Eastern Partnership, Central Asia and Afghanistan, we have been conducting joint projects with many other OECD Directorates, including the GRS MENA Division.
I have been involved in the work on multiple OECD projects - from gender equality, consumer protection and digitalisation, to green energy reforms and regional development & decentralisation - being in constant contact with the partners from the EU, UN agencies and other international and civil society organisations, and national governments representatives👩🏼💻
The knowledge of the European and OECD member-countries’ policies, and experience in project management and policy analysis which I obtained throughout my Master studies, have helped me a lot in my daily-work.
After graduation, I plan to continue working in the policy analysis and consulting sector, either at an international organisation or a think-tank.
And to everyone who’s reading this: best of luck in anything you do, and big hugs to my EUROSUD classmates wherever you are 🤗
EUROSUD Staff Student Liaison Committee Meeting (SSLC)
The EUROSUD Staff Student Liaison Committee Meeting (SSLC) took place on 17 February 2021. Our Student Reps work hard to report for and back to both cohorts of students who are currently in their mobility locations (Athens/Madrid/LUISS/Marseille). This is one of our most important meetings, providing a channel for our students to voice any issues they may have. The Committee are very proactive in ensuring any concerns or ideas that the students have come up with are met and that we are fully supporting the students.
Well done Merima!
We wish to congratulate our International Master student, Merima Muhic on her achievement, of receiving the Golden Badge award.
Merima went back to her (old) University to pick up her diploma and the Golden Badge. The Golden Badge award is given for exceptional success during studies to students of faculties and academies of the University of Sarajevo who have completed (in the regular term) the first cycle of studies in which they achieved an average grade not lower than 9.5/10 in all of their classes, including the grade of the final thesis.
Congratulations!
